FAQ

Why Protein Mods?

We perform reliable protein modifications at a price amenable to routine laboratory use. Our convenient service saves you time and money.

How do I get started?

If the protein is available from a commercial source, complete this vendor supplied order form.  We will contact you with final pricing. There are no additional steps required.

If you want your own protein modified, we will send you a cooler and pre-paid label after you fill the Customer supplied order form. Package your protein with cold packs (no dry ice please) and send it using the pre-paid label. If you wish to reduce your waiting time, you may send your protein in your own cooler to:

Will modifying my protein affect its activity or integrity?

The answer varies from protein to protein. Most proteins function properly even if a modest proportion of primary amines are modified. We aim to modify between 5-10% of a protein’s amines.

What level of purity can I expect?

We typically remove ~99% of the unreacted chemical modifiers. With peroxidase conjugations, we only remove unreacted peroxidase from antibody samples.

What yield can I expect?

The exact yield will vary depending on the particular protein.

Yields are typically in the 80-90% range for fluorophore, thiol and biotin conjugations, whereas those for agarose bead and peroxidase conjugation can be lower.

What can you tell me about my modified protein?

We will indicate the percent yield. For fluorophores and biotins, we also estimate the number of modifications/molecule. For agarose-bead conjugation we estimate the amount of protein/mL of wet beads.

Due to inherent complexities of peroxidase conjugation, we are unable to provide percent yield. However, we do indicate the amount of peroxidase activity as well as estimate the total amount of protein.

My protein is in Tris buffer. Can you still modify it?

Yes we can. We remove small molecular weight molecules that may interfere with modification. Let us know if your protein includes high levels of amine-containing molecules or other potentially interfering substances in the solution.

I have protease inhibitors in my protein solution. Will this be a problem?

Please let us know which protease inhibitors are present. Most protease inhibitors pose no problem.

When can I expect my modified protein?

Once we receive your protein, you will typically receive the modified version(s) in about a week. If you need your protein quickly, we can use a faster method, but yields may be lower.
