Bovine serum albumin (BSA) is a slightly acidic ~66 kd protein. BSA is commonly used in biological research due to its low cost and inertness. Dilute enzymes can be stabilized by BSA (useful for restriction digests). BSA is a common blocking agent in western blotting and ELISA's. Although, bovine serum albumin is exceptionally soluble (up to 50% w/v in buffered saline), it is typically used at a concentration of 0.1-1% w/v.
